Stable Planted Aquarium
Although you can grow it in a brightly lit aquarium with two watts or more per gallon of light, you can grow it more slowly in aquaria with only 1 to 1 1/2 watts per gallon of light. Another slow-growing, relatively undemanding plant is Java fern (Microsorum pteropus, sometimes mistakenly written as "Microsorium"). This dark green plant with short stems and cardioid-shaped leaves does well in a moderately lit aquarium or when shaded in a brightly lit aquarium. There are slow and fast-growing plants that are easy to grow. If water conditions should take an undesirable turn, Java fern will not wither and shrink overnight. The slower- growing plants will more easily adapt to a moderately lit (less than 2 watts per gallon) aquarium with low levels of nutrients. The leaves sometimes develop into two or three lobes, but this seems to happen mostly on plants that have been allowed to grow large. Among the slower-growing plants, you might try Anubias barteri var nana. Because it grows very...Banana Plants and Java Ferns pruning/propagating
Results are, with my low lighting that all of my plants look much healthier than when I bought them, they have all grown some, and my brownish-sick looking banana plants are now entirely green and everything looks great. Over the last week or so I noticed that my java ferns and banana plants have done some changing. Here's what's happened, and I'd like any advice on pruning and propagating to keep these healthy and possibly grow some more plants. Do I break off the 'bananas' and plant them seperately, or do I snap off the shoots (if so where at) and replant them. now the ends of the spouts have arched over and a leaf on the end of each shoot (one per plant) is starting to form....
Otos & Java Fern
I put 27 in the tank 1 year ago, and when I moved the tank over the summer, had to catch them all and found 27 to move, so no losses. Two quick questions (hopefully) I noticed on leaves of the java fern that are turning brown, there are what appear to be new sprouts. I try to do a head count of all my fish every morning, but even just 3 or 4 otos in a tank are hard to find. I don't count them everyday, but I do keep an eye on the tank and make sure they are getting enough algae. Usually they are so busy chasing each other off the 'best' spot, its just a flurry of activity. They LOVE to congrate on the 'algae logs. OC, I believe you have talked about having a large group of otos (27. How do you keep track of them....
