Ripariums: A New Type of Planted Tank

The shoreline plant habitat is such a special kind of environment that certain plant species, known collectively as marginal plants, have evolved to grow there. Marginal plants enjoy bright sunlight, usually ample nutrients and abundant water, but they must also contend with low oxygen levels in the muddy or boggy substrates where their roots grow. The lush plant growth there provides dense cover where smaller fish can hide from predators, and it also supports many aquatic insects and other small food items. One of the most distinctive features of aquatic ecosystems, such as ponds, rivers, lakes and streams, are the shallow shoreline areas where the land meets the water.

I think that the rhizome is just growing like crazy because it has the nutrients to do so. I don't think a sword plant of any type wouldn't be very well anchored if the rhizome was above the substrate. It appears as though the rhizome is growing/elongating vertically out of the substrate so that it looks like a little palm tree with the rhizome an inch tall and the leaves sprouting from the top. Its not like an anubias or java fern where it has to be above the substrate. There are no roots growing out of the rhizome above the substrate line. IDK) is above the substate and the plant grows normally. So my Pygmy Chain Sword in my Natural Planted Tank is growing quite strangely. It doesn't look like the Juncus....

Circulation needed for emersed anubias/java fern?

I have had some Java Fern that took almost 5 months to grow in all new emersed leaves but it was definetly worth the wait. I have an emersed setup with an Anubias nana, a C. wendtii, and a Microsorum Pteropus (java fern). I have them both in separate containers with gravel, with the leaves above the water level and the rhizomes below. Just be patient my friend, Anubias, Java Fern, Cryptocoryne all grow fairly slow especially when in transition from submersed to emersed. Java Fern will probably take the longest to show good emersed growth.
