undergravel filter

This is part 4 in a short series on animation to do with setting up an aquarium. This animation talks about undergravel filtration.

Aquarium Filter Maintenance

Undergravel filters  are unique because they use the substrate as the filter medium. Water is drawn into a bed of gravel 2 to 3 inches in depth, through the filter plate, and then up and out via airlift tubes or one or more powerheads. Inevitably, some debris will collect under the filter plate. When done regularly, this should keep an undergravel filter in good working order. Silt and debris get trapped in the gravel, and the gravel grains are covered with the bacteria that remove ammonia and nitrite. Because the gravel is live biological media, treat it as you would any other live biological media: Do not allow it to dry out, and do not wash it under a hot tap.

Is the Aquarium Undergravel Filter A Good Choice?

One such type of filtration system is the aquarium undergravel filter. An aquarium undergravel filter is simple in its design. Also known simply as a "UG filter," it combines mechanical and biological processes to maintain the water in your tank clean and well-balanced. The tray will also have multiple lift tubes which rise from it. These lift tubes will use the circulatory power of an air pump or power head to lift water from the bottom of the tank and return it via their upper openings. This tray design keeps the gravel substrate from touching the actual tank bottom. Since the water located at the bottom of the tank has been forced to pass through the gravel by the...
